East India Company Ship Stores Pistol for the Ship Thomas Grenville, James Leigh, London, c. 1808. 12 in., .62 caliber round barrel with ring decorated breech, London Company of Gunmaker's proof marks and multiple inspector's marks at the breech, the top of the barrel engrave 'THOS GRENVILLE'; flat lock plate with pointed tail, engraved 'LEIGH' below the pan and stamped with a crown over '2' storekeeper's mark; walnut stock marked crown over 'S' on the wrist, several inspector's marks in the rammer channel; brass furniture including trigger guard with a pointed finial, rounded butt cap with short ears, flat side plate with steel belt hook and tapering rammer pipe, wood rammer with brass tip. Overall lg. 19 1/4 in. Condition: Barrel and lock with mottled gray toning and light to moderate pitting, stock has a wood patch restoration on the right side adjacent to the butt cap and overall dings dents and scratches, brass toned to yellow, action does not catch on half or full cock. Footnotes: Provenance The Robert Brooker Collection. Note The East India ship Thomas Grenville was one of only a small number of ships actually owned by the British East India Company. It was launched at the Bombay Dockyard in 1808 and made 14 voyages for the company between 1809 and 1834.
