US Model 1840 Cavalry Saber. Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Massachusetts, 1857. Brass hilt with two branches connecting to a pommel cap marked 'J.H.' and 'R.H.K.W.,' leather covered grip with twisted brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip, single narrow and single wide fuller, one side of the ricasso marked 'U.S./J.H./1857' and the other side marked 'AMES MFG CO/CHICOPEE/MASS'; steel scabbard with two suspension rings. Blade lg. 35 3/4, overall lg. 41 1/2 in. Condition: Hilt toned to dark yellow and with scattered dings and dents, blade is mostly bright with scattered spots and areas of light bray/brown toning; scabbard surface is oxidized.
