German Infantry Sword and Belt with Pair of Leather Breeches, late 18th century. The infantry sword with brass hilt, the heart-shaped counter-guard engraved on the facing side 'C.R.C.G' and 'C.5/No. 5.' with knuckle bow connecting to a bulbous pommel and spiraling solid brass grip; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single narrow fuller; blackened leather scabbard with tooling on the front, sheet brass band with suspension loop, no tip suspended in a deerskin frog with shoulder belt. Blade lg. 24 1/2, overall lg. 30 1/2 in. The buff leather breeches with fall front secured by two buttons, waistband with three buttons, pockets and watch pocket, the legs with four buttons. Ht. approx. 34, waist dia. approx. 32 in. Footnotes: Provenance According to a letter included with this lot, the sword was picked up on Bunker Hill presumably by Samuel Blood (1749-1834) of Bolton, Massachusetts, who served in Captain Jonathan Houghton's Company of Colonel Smith's Regiment in 1776. The breeches were owned by Thomas Heywood Blood (1775-1848) of Bolton who served in the Bolton militia during the War of 1812.
