American Horseman's Saber, possibly South Carolina, c. 1780. Brass hilt with slotted counter-guard, tapering knuckle bow connecting to a ring-turned pommel, spiral carved cherry grip with brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the top and no fullers; black leather scabbard with tooled decoration, sheet brass tip and throat. Blade lg. 30 1/2, overall lg. 36 1/4 in. Condition: Hilt tone to yellow and with scattered dings and dents, grip has tight hairlines, hilt is tight on the blade tang; blade toned to mottled gray; scabbard has much surface loss and appears to have a repair near the center.
