A Gene Tierney and Jeanne Crain Costume Sketch for Leave Her to Heaven Designed by Kay Nelson, Sketched by Paula Giokaris Twentieth Century-Fox, 1945. Gouache, pencil, and ink on illustration paper, featuring the three female leads of the film (Gene Tierney, Jeanne Crain, and Mary Philips), with each character's name and change number written in pencil above their respective sketch ('Ellen #3,' 'Ruth #3,' and 'Mrs. Berent #3,') the latter of which did not meet with Fox Studio Chief Darryl F. Zanuck's approval, as he has penciled his initials, 'No / D.Z.,' next to the third sketch. 'Jeanne Craine [sic]' is written in pencil under her character, with penciled notation on the bottom '46935 - Lizzie,' with a description plate stapled to bottom detailing the scenes, what was worn, and an overall description of the scene, and a stamped box dated 1945, with various approval signatures/initials including 'JS' (director John Stahl) and 'Bacher' (producer William Bacher). As evidenced by the scene in the film, Zanuck's word was law, as Mary Philips does not wear the costume shown on this sketch. Gene Tierney is positively evil in this drama costarring Cornel Wilde and Jeanne Crain in which she portrays an insecure wife who is consumed with jealousy. It's a surprise that Fox would allow their biggest star to play such a despicable character, but the film only heightened Tierney's popularity and was a huge box office success. This sketch of three costumes represents those worn by the female leads in the scene where Tierney rides a horse and scatters the ashes of her father in a canyon while her mother, sister, and Cornel Wilde, all on horseback, watch. 14 x 20 in.
