A Pair of Letters Pertaining to the Title Sequence of the Marilyn Monroe film, The Seven Year Itch Comprising a Twentieth Century-Fox interoffice memo from Frank McCarthy, Director of Public Relations, to Studio Head Darryl F. Zanuck and Producer Sig Rogell, 1 p, October 22, 1954, pertaining to The Seven Year Itch; together with a Typed Document Signed ('Frank'), 1 p, 4to, October 26, 1954, Beverly Hills, on Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation letterhead, to Charles Feldman, with 'Received / Oct 27 1954' stamp to upper right corner, 2-hole punched, with aforementioned interoffice memo stapled to upper left corner; together with a rarely seen gelatin silver 8 x 10 in. photo of Marilyn Monroe in the famous skirt-blowing scene from The Seven Year Itch, with Tom Ewell. In this entertaining correspondence between McCarthy, the powers-that-be at Fox and agent/producer Charles Feldman, McCarthy first explains that 'a piece of film' of Monroe in the skirt-blowing scene was being considered for the opening titles of the film; he proceeds to write why he thinks this idea might not work, questioning the presence of underclothing and 'the special character of the pants.' He goes on to write, 'If you plan to use this shot for title backings, I should like to take the unusual measure of showing it to the Breen office.' According to McCarthy's follow-up letter to Charles Feldman, Zanuck's reply to the memo was, 'I agree with you, but don't show it to them now, as we can decide later.' Alas, this idea never came to fruition, and the much tamer title sequence was eventually created by famed artist Saul Bass. 8 x 10 in.
