A Judy Garland Costume Sketch by Ray Aghayan, Sketched by Bob Mackie, for The Judy Garland Show CBS, 1963-64. Gouache, watercolor, and ink on illustration board, with a note from designer Ray Aghayan to Judy Garland taped to upper right corner which reads, 'Dear Judy, / This one is my preferred dress. It should look absolutely MARVELOUS on you. / The sequined crepe and the over tabert is of chiffon embroidered. / I hope you will choose this one. / Love & kisses,' in typescript, signed ('AR') in black ink. The wardrobe for The Judy Garland Show, designed by Aghayan, brought out a stylish side of Garland that had not been seen up to that time. The tastefulness of bateau necks, three-quarter-length sleeves, and just the perfect amount of subtle beading in both short and long dresses gave Garland elegance. As Aghayan's sketch artist, Bob Mackie was learning from the master, and Mackie eventually went on to make an even bigger name for himself in the design world. The Judy Garland Show was a variety show of which only 26 episodes were made (it was up against Bonanza), but it is a time capsule of Garland in superb voice, looking great, and collaborating with a stellar cast and crew. 10.5 x 20 in.
