Chippendale Mahogany Oxbow Slant-lid Desk, New England, c. 1780. Narrow top blind-dovetailed to sides, chamfered at front edge to receive bracketed single-board front, which opens on square hinges over three-tiered cockbead-molded interior with top row of three fan-carved drawers separated by three valanced compartments, over row of three shallow drawers, slightly stepped-back from bottom drawer of the same, over a case with four graduated drawers, the top drawer with solid oxbow carved front and the lower three with conforming serpentine fronts, separated by cockbead-molded partial dustboards, enclosed at bottom and the back lined with rabbeted panels arranged vertically, raised on forelegs terminating in broad ball-and-claw feet and carved ogee bracket feet in rear, the front and sides with shaped and spurred knee returns, (repairs, hardware replaced), 111cm wide, 58cm deep, 106cm high (44 1/2in wide, 23in deep, 42 1/2in high). Footnotes: Note A paper label on proper left top corner of backboard is inscribed, 'Alfred Talbot Baker from His Mother. February 9th 1924'. The central fan-carved desk drawer is inscribed 'Geo. H.
