19th Century American School Rapelye Homestead, Astoria, New York. Depicting white farmhouse on corner lot enclosed by white picket fence, flower garden, and large willow tree, figures in mid-19th-century dress populating the paved sidewalk in foreground. Together with signed and sealed £200 bond of Stephen Hallett against Cornelius and Mariah (Riker) Rapelye, dated 1 May 1799. Stamp of New York City artists' materials supplier Edward Dechaux on l.l. reverse, with stenciled number 2230 at l.r. Oil on canvas Canvas, 30 x 22 in. Footnotes: Provenance By descent from Lydia (Hyatt) Rapelye (1836-1915) through her niece, Sarah Louisa (Kouwenhoven) Haines (1862-1930). Note The house at 29 Main Street near Hallett's Cove, Newtown (Astoria), Queens, was built c. 1790 by Jacobus Riker (1736-1809) and occupied by his daughter, Mariah (1762-1832), after her marriage to Cornelius Rapelye (1748-1828) in 1780. Together with the 'Red Tavern' (c. 1780) at 878 Boulevard, portions of which appear at the left of the painting, the mansion was home to members of the Rapelye and Trafford families into the 1910s. Both properties were demolished by 1925 and the land is now part of the Astoria Houses development.
