Two 'D. Clark' Painted Leather Fire Buckets, probably Manchester, New Hampshire, c. 1840. The leather body with molded baluster walls over a straight foot, hand-stitched seam, bottom, and top edge sewn over an iron hoop, with riveted sheet iron ears inserted through slits in rim, hinged to iron rings securing leather-covered rope swing handles, the exterior walls painted teal with elaborate polychrome and gilded frontispiece comprising a landscape painting, potentially depicting the White Mountains, in a scrolled and rayed cartouche, flanked by scrolled banner inscribed 'D. CLARK / No 3.' and 'D. CLARK / No. 4.' in black, likely for Judge Daniel Clark (1809-91), a New Hampshire state Senator and one of the first Chiefs of the Manchester Fire Department, diam. 7 1/4, ht.
