Coopered Bucket with Portrait of the Steamship Franklin, Champlain Valley, Vermont, late 19th century. Constructed of jointed staves with steel hoop and ears hinged to wire bail handle, the exterior painted black and inscribed in shaded gold letters: 'CAPT. R.W. SHERMAN. / STEAM-PACKET FRANKLIN. / KEEP YOUR TEMPER.' opposite a framed reserve containing detailed rendering of a steamboat inscribed 'FRANKLIN' across the sidewheel, (excluding handle) diam. 12 1/2, ht. 9 1/4 in. Footnotes: Note Captain Richard Winslow Sherman (1797-1868) took command of the Lake Champlain Transportation Co. steamship Franklin in 1837, towards the end of an illustrious career. He became a popular hero as Captain of the Phoenix, which caught fire en route from Whitehall, New York to St. Johns, Quebec, via Burlington, Vermont, on 5 September 1819. Accounts of Sherman's bravery in rescuing passengers 'stirred the public imagination and popular emotion,' inspiring the motto, 'Keep your temper'.
