Early Chippendale Walnut Armchair, probably Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, c. 1750. The scratch-beaded and carved crest centering a round arch between ogee rails terminating in deep, in-cut scrolled ears, mounted over tapered half-round stiles flanking a pierced crest lap-joined to shoe, which is tacked over back rail of the trapezoidal seat frame, the dished and carved scroll armrests round-tenoned through stiles being draw-joined and raised on dished, quarter-urn carved vertical supports with boss terminals screwed to the canted seat stretchers, the slip-seat frame having four vertically-oriented cylindrical glue blocks at the double-pegged joints with cabriole forelegs and through-tenoned chamfered rear legs continuing from stiles, the front legs with additional nailed brackets carved with volute returns conforming to in-cut shell-carved knees over the compressed ball-and-claw feet, includes slip seat with later needlepoint upholstery depicting an unidentified coat of arms above a banner inscribed 'Ducit Amor Patria' (Love of Country Leads Me), 76cm wide, 60cm deep, 101cm high (30in wide, 24 1/2in deep, 40 1/4in high).
