Federal Mahogany-veneered Tambour Secretary, New England, 19th-century. Flat mahogany top applied with molding to slightly overhang case of tambour doors flanking a large prospect door, all richly decorated with veneered crossbanding, string-inlay, and marquetry in various contrasting figured hardwoods, the case resting on top of a folding desk, behind a slightly canted top leaf that opens to reveal an attractively bright leather writing surface enclosed with a gilt and tooled border that conforms with the raised hinges, all over case of three cockbead-molded and string-inlaid long drawers with period brasses impressed 'W.J.' on bails, all dovetailed to pine frames with chamfered bottoms, the crossband-veneered dividers aligning with inlaid pattern on the front of the stiles, which continue to stout tapered legs with frontal cuffs and stringing, the undecorated rear legs joined to the ends of a smooth, single-board backing, separate from the two roughly planed horizontal boards enclosing the upper section, closed, 99cm wide, 50cm deep, 121cm high (39 5/8in wide, 20in deep, 48in high).
