Chippendale Cherry Desk and Bookcase, New England, late 18th/early 19th century. In two parts; the shallow upper section with cavetto- and dentil-molded flat cornice applied to front and returns of the case with single-board top blind-dovetailed to sides, the front containing two doors with through-tenoned serpentine frames surrounding a recessed panel, each opening onto an interior with two fixed shelves, the case enclosed at bottom and by three rabbeted vertical back boards; rests inside raised molding applied to the top of desk, whose canted front contains a side-batten slant lid that opens onto a three-tiered interior of ten valanced compartments over five drawers over a row of two equal openings, possibly for split drawers, all over a case of four graduated dovetailed cherry and pine drawers with replaced period hardware, the bottom fully enclosed over molded base of ogee bracket feet with spurred returns, the back of case enclosed with three horizontally-oriented beveled boards, includes key for bookcase, 104cm wide, 50cm deep, 198cm high (41in wide, 20 1/4in deep, 78 1/4in high).
