Glazed and Carved Pine Cupboard, Hackensack, New Jersey, c. 1840. The upper case with ogee cornice molding applied to front and returns, overhanging a narrow frieze intaglio-carved with small circular and oval pateras across front, underscored by double-bead molding applied as above, the nailed case containing two joined six-pane glazed doors flanked by three-pane sidelights, opening onto an interior fitted with two serpentine cyma-curved shelves, and enclosed at back with rabbeted vertical boards; resting in mid-molding applied to top of the lower case, which contains one row of cockbead-molded and carved drawers with poplar frames and period stamped brass handles inscribed 'Peace' above a dove, the long and short drawers aligning over a two-door cupboard base with bead-molded and intaglio-carved panel decoration, the shelved interior enclosed at back as on upper case, all raised on tapered bracket feet cut out of end- and backboards, vestiges of old white paint throughout, 134cm wide, 43cm deep, 218cm high (53 1/2in wide, 17 1/2in deep, 86 1/2in high).
