Glazed compass recessed in carved hardwood housing lined with engraved print of a compass rose and dial centering a hand-colored illustration of a man surveying a coastline, encircled with band border inscribed 'Made by Thomas Greenough Boston N. England', retaining removable carved ebony vanes at ends, mounted on a later wooden stand with plaque inscribed, 'Colonial Surveyors Compass / Boston Maker Thomas Greenough / Robert Nittolo Collection', wd. 12 3/4, dp. 5 5/8, ht. 11 in.
