A GROUP OF FIVE KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Meiji (1868-1812), Taisho (1912-1926, or Showa (1926-1989) era, 19th and 20th century Comprising a shallow rectangular box with an inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid, decorated in gold and brown hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, hirame, and kinpun with a cottage by a waterfall and stream in a hilly landscape with blossoming cherry trees, the interior nashiji and the rims silver; A fan-shaped box with a kabusebuta (overhanging) lid with cut-away sides decorated with pine branches and needles in gold and silver hiramaki-e on a mura-nashji ground, the interior nashiji; A circular ring-form box decorated in red, green, and gold lacquer on a reddish-brown ground, the interior gold leaf; A circular wood box decorated with bamboo in gold and red hiramaki-e, the ground left undecorated; A dark wood box carved as a butterfly 3 3/8 x 3 x 3/4in (9.5 x 7.6 x 1.9cm), the largest (5).
