TWO SMALL LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century Each circular, the first with a flat kabusebuta (overhanging) lid decorated with Mount Fuji, eggplants, and hawks in flight, the symbols of Hatsuyume, the auspicious first dream of the new year, in gold and silver takamaki-e and inlaid iridescent shell and pewter against a bright kinji ground; The second with a flat lid decorated with a single cricket in gold, silver, and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a bright kinji ground, the interior and recessed base nashiji embellished with kirikane, the rims silver 2 5/8in (6.6cm); 2 1/2in (6.3cm) diameter (2).
