A GROUP OF FOUR KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, 20th century Each circular, comprising a wood box of shallow cylindrical profile with a flat, inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated with a chrysanthemum in high-relief green, white, and yellow takamori-e, signed in black lacquer on the base Ikkokusai, with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed Onkōgō, dated Showa tsuchinoe tora (1938) and signed Kōryō Kinjō Ikkokusai nanajūissai tsukuru (Made by Ikkokusai at age 71) and sealed Ikkokusai and another seal; A red-lacquer box with a domed inrōbuta lid, the interior black-lacquer decorated with blossoming flowers in shell inlays, with a wood tomobako storage box; A black-lacquer box with a domed inrōbuta lid decorated overall with stylized phoenix and flowering vines in red lacquer; A black-lacquer box with an inrōbuta lid, the interior with birds in flight in shell inlays 2 7/8in (7.3cm) diameter, the largest (4). Footnotes: Takamori-e is a variation of takamaki-e which utilizes clay as a base to build up a decorative design before the final coats of lacquer are added, making the design stand in high relief.
