A LARGE LACQUER SAKAZUKI (FOOTED CUP FOR SAKE) AND A SET OF THREE INLAID-LACQUER SAKAZUKI Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/20th century Each circular, set on a tall, splayed foot, bearing a red-lacquer ground, the large cup decorated on the interior with Mt. Fuji and a hawk perched on a pine bough, the underside with a leafy branch of eggplants, all in gold and silver takamaki-e and kirikane; The set of three cups of graduated size decorated on the interior with various scenes of birds and flowers in inlays of shell, colored lacquer, and coral, the undersides all decorated as chrysanthemum blossoms in two shades of gold takamaki-e 5 3/4in (14.6cm) diamter; 4 1/4in (10.8cm) diameter, the largest of the set (4). Footnotes: Hatsuyume, the first dream of the new year, is important in Japan as it is believed that it will foretell the fortunes of the coming year for the dreamer. A dream of a hawk, an eggplant, and Mount Fuji is considered to be particularly lucky.
