TWO LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century The first of reniform shape, decorated in silver and red takamaki-e and simulated bronze with a Buddhist kei (ritual gong) and a priest's scepter on the exterior against a ground of roiro-nuri and sparse hirame, the interior with a fly whisk and a Buddhist recitation on a fundame ground; The second rectangular, with a slightly domed lid decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e with a bird bringing straw to its mate building a nest in the eaves of a roof, the pillar decorated with kirikane and inlaid crushed shell, all against a nashiji ground, the interiors nashiji and the rims pewter 3 1/2 x 2 5/8 x 5/8in (8.9 x 6.7 x 1.6cm); 3 5/8 x 3 x 1 7/8in (9.2 x 7.6 x 4.8cm) high (2).
