Xixiang ji or 'Romance of the Western Chamber' was written in the Tang dynasty and tells the story of the romance between the scholar, Zheng Sheng, and the daughter of a Tang dynasty minister, Cui Yingying. Cui's mother initially opposes their union and sends Zheng Sheng away to pursue academic achievement. Later, Zheng Sheng rescues Yingying from bandits, and though her mother had promised her hand in marriage to her savior, she reneges on her offer. Ultimately, the couple does marry. The scene portrayed on the plaque captures a moment from Act I, where the lovers first cross paths within a temple. Zheng Sheng pays a visit to the nearby Salvation Monastery, guided by a monk named Fa Cong. It is there that Zhang encounters Cui and her maid.
