Of Grand Tour interest: a selection of eight Italian 19th century trays of plaster intaglios Probably from the workshop of Pietro Paoletti (Rome, 1801-1847) With later perspex covers, enclosing an arrangement of plaster intaglios featuring Emperors, scholars, Italian ruins, etc., each tray: 20cm wide, 3cm deep, 32cm high (7 1/2in wide, 1in deep, 12 1/2in high) (8) Footnotes: Provenance Thomas Coulborn & Sons, Sutton Coldfield. The Paoletti studio was located on the Piazza di Spagna in Rome until 1847 and enjoyed an excellent reputation throughout the 'Grand Tour'. They counted among their clients Catherine the Great of Russia and Ferdinand III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The firm continued to do business after the death of Pietro until at least 1865. Examples of the Paoletti casts are conserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut.
