After the Antique: a plaster library bust of a classical lady Made by Domenico Brucciani & Co, London, mid-19th century Looking slightly to dexter, numbered 2886. 90. and stamped 'D. BRUCCIANI & CO. / LONDON' to the reverse, on a wooden circular socle base, 34cm wide, 21cm deep, 67cm high (13in wide, 8in deep, 26in high) Footnotes: Provenance Christie's, South Kensington, London, Aynhoe Park - A Modern Grand Tour, 9 October 2012, lot 298. Brucciani was born in Lucca, Italy in 1815. By 1837 he had moved to London and had established a Gallery of Casts in Convent Garden. Cast making was becoming a lucrative business in the 19th century, and Brucciani successfully forged relationships with the British Museum and the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria & Albert Museum). His most famous work was the ambitious casting of the Pórtico de la Gloria, the 12th-century façade of the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 1866. The Cast Courts at the South Kensington Museum were specifically designed to be able to accommodate this 18-metre wide cast.
