KENZAN A Satsuma-Ware Square Koro (Incense burner) and Cover Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Decorated in enamels and gilt with a continuous scene depicting Kikujido seated against rocks reading a scroll among a mass of chrysanthemums growing from behind the rocks and trailing around the sides, the shoulder also embellished with chrysanthemum heads interwoven among karakusa ('Chinese grasses'), the square cover pierced with four lobed apertures and surmounted by a finial in the form of a shishi (Chinese mythological lion dog); signed on the base Kenzan beneath the Satsuma mon (crest). 12cm x 8.5cm (4¾in x 3 3/8in).
