ANONYMOUS Eight Scenes of Customs and Ceremonies Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century Ink, colours, and gold on silk within gold-paper-edged silk mounts, each framed and glazed, probably cut from a makimono depicting scenes of the twelve months including: pine saplings set out at New Year (first month); tatebina dolls on display for Girls' Day (third month); a banner, weapons, and helmet and mask on display for Boys' Day (fifth month); moon-viewing (eight month); an exhibition of prize chrysanthemums (ninth month); fox figurines on sale at a Shinto shrine (twelfth month); and two other scenes.
