Edward Hodges Baily (British, 1788-1867) A plaster figure of Hercules throwing Lichas into the Sea The wide eyed demi-god with wide contrapposto stance and bent limbs as he hurls Lichas into the sea, Lichas now lacking, the whole raised on cut rectangular plinth, signed E.H.Baily and indistinctly dated ..15..1814, 37.5cm high, 25.4cm wide, 21cm deep Footnotes: Arguably best known for his figure of Nelson for Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, E.H. Baily also produced reliefs for Marble Arch, the National Gallery and Buckingham Palace. Baily studied under the important sculptor Jonn Flaxman and was employed in his studio for seven years. In 1808 he won a silver medal from the Society of Arts, and joined the Royal Academy in the same year, winning the gold medal there in 1811. In 1821 Baily was elected a Royal Academician, his diploma work being a portrait of his former Master, Flaxman. Baily produced numerous other portrait busts and monuments including a bust of Prince Albert in 1841 which was commissioned by Queen Victoria the year before.
