Studio of Robert Hunter (active Ireland, 1750-1780) Portrait of Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl of Harcourt, standing, three-quarter-length, wearing Peer's robes oil on canvas 120.5 x 98.9cm (47 7/16 x 38 15/16in). framed: 130.5 x 109.2cm Footnotes: Provenance In the present owner's family for at least 80 years Simon Harcourt (1714-1777) was created Earl Harcourt of Stanton Harcourt in 1749, following his services to the Crown in the Jacobite rising; he raised his own regiment, gaining commission as Colonel (and promotion to General in 1772). He held a number of diplomatic appointments and positions in court, including Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales, British Ambassador to Paris (1767-1772), and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1772-1777). In 1761, he was appointed to request Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz's hand in marriage on behalf of George III, and to escort the new Princess to Britain. Simon Harcourt retired to his seat in Nuneham Park in 1777, where he died attempting to save his dog from a well. Horace Walpole wrote 'It appears that his dog had fallen in, and that the Earl, endeavouring to recover him, had lost his poise and fallen in himself'. There are two other known portraits of Simon Harcourt by Robert Hunter, one in robes, currently in Nuneham Courtenay, and the other in the National Gallery of Ireland (obj. no. NGI.1002), which was engraved by E. Fisher in 1775.
