NICK LOWE (B. 1980) Yellow Tabs, 2021 signed, titled and dated (on the reverse) acrylic on canvas in artist's frame 16 x 20 in. 40.6 x 50.8 cm. Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Exhibited Los Angeles, Blossom Market, John Kleckner and Nick Lowe, 2021 Artist statement: Nick Lowe's paintings evolve over time through intricate layers of activity, drawing upon a diverse vocabulary of mark-making that includes scribbles, lines, spirals, clouds, dots, loops, and dashes. The progression of a painting is both additive and subtractive, with marks being scratched out or compositions being painted over entirely, often beginning paintings anew from the 'ghost' of its predecessor. Creating a painting (or drawing) can span anywhere from three days to five years, constantly trying to carve out negative spaces and moments of rest, coupled by the aspiration to pinpoint the moment when a painting achieves sentience, or completion. Lowe aims to capture the immediacy and emotional essence of drawing while embracing the extensive decision-making process and material complexities of the painting process.
