DUSTIN METZ (B. 1984) Memorial with Landscape Plate, 2020 signed, titled and dated (on the reverse) watercolor and gouache on inkjet print collage on paper 7 x 5 1/2 in. 17.8 x 14 cm. Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Artist statement: Dustin Metz is a painter, working mostly in oil, whose subject matter includes fruit in existential crisis, disembodied wildfire smoke seen in the sky, and massive bibles. Alongside these ongoing bodies of work are his collages, made from inkjet printouts of photos he takes on his phone. They could be anything from reference pictures from museum visits, pictures of the progression of a bruise, vacation photos, and accidental shots. The collages are often painted on with gouache as a way of integrating multiple images into photographic spaces- like an analogue clone brush in Photoshop. Using similar ideas of layered space and time from his paintings, the collages are a way to search for new ways of making images, asking what happens when I put this on top of that inside of this.
