THOMAS MARTINEZ PILNIK (B. 1993) Blue Ashtray 1, 2024 signed with the artist's initials and dated (lower right) oil on canvas with glazed stoneware artist's frame 7 x 7 x 2 in. 17.8 x 17.8 x 5.1 cm. Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Artist statement: Thomas Martinez Pilnik's hands are beginning to reveal a universal and existential absolute - the same ones he saw as his grandmother passed from this plane of existence into the next. They are often dry, calloused, splintered, chewed, and tender. They belie his anxiety, his distrust, and his misuse of materials. They tell the story of his skin: scarred, on alert, under the microscope at any given time. They also feed him, fuel him, and allow him to banish the fear through creating, caressing, and consuming. Through textiles, ceramics, and painting, his work tells this same story of grief, imperfection, impermanence, and joy.
