Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Artist statement: Hancock's paintings make reference to his experience of growing up surrounded by woods in the Deep South. The imagery depicted often pushes past the point of fantasy towards a surrealist logic, embracing a formalism that can be highly idiosyncratic. This combination of distorted signifiers, formal abstraction, and carefully chosen pictorial filters evokes both the sense of memory and an unfolding capacity for a deep hallucinatory imagining.
