Collier en or Java oriental, Indonésie, Xe-XIIe siècle A gold necklace East Java, Indonesia, 10th-12th century the finely wrought chain composed of complex cruciform loops, each terminal representing the stylised head of the Serpent God Naga, with modern period clasp 41.5cm (16 3/8 in.), 95.16 g, 18 ct. Footnotes: Provenance Taisei Gallery New York, 4 November 1992, Lot 353 Thomas Murray, California Connell collection, San Francisco Private collection, Asia In the spiritual traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the naga is a legendary entity often portrayed as having a divine or semi-divine status, possessing both human and serpentine characteristics. Revered across South and Southeast Asia, it is said to inhabit a subterranean realm known as Naga-loka or Patala-loka which is resplendent with jewels and riches. As creatures linked to aquatic environments, nagas are considered custodians of wealth. The depiction of the naga is not merely ornamental, but is imbued with profound symbolism, and its representation in Southeast Asian jewellery is a testament to its cultural and religious significance. The naga motif is used in jewellery and other art forms to symbolise the harmonious coexistence of contrasting forces. It is also regarded as a sacred emblem in numerous Southeast Asian traditions. This balanced portrayal underscores the naga's multifaceted role as both a protector and a symbol of the interconnectedness of the spiritual and material realms. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU. TVA sur les objets importés à un taux réduit de 5.5% sur le prix d'adjudication et un taux en vigueur sur la prime d'achat dans le cas où l'objet reste dans l'Union Européenne.
