Mangku Mura (Indonesian, 1920-1999) Scène narrative tirée des épopées traditionnelles signée en balinais et en anglais: MangkuMura. Br. Siku. Kamasan.Klungkung. Bali. (revers) encre et couleurs sur toile signed in Balinese and in English (reverse) ink and colour on cloth 80 x 80 cm (31 1/2 x 31 1/2 in) Footnotes: Veuillez noter que ce lot sera vendu sans réserve Provenance Acquired by the present owner directly from the artist in Bali between 1998-2003 Private collection, Europe Kamasan painting, a form of Balinese heritage art which originated in Kamasan village in the 16th century, recounts sacred stories through its symbolic visual language. Depicting narrative panels of the Hindu epics and folklore through the use of natural pigments, this artistic tradition is integral to Balinese spiritual life, with the paintings adorning temples and homes during ceremonies. The iconography and cultural lexicon which characterise this style of painting are quintessentially Balinese, thus making it a cornerstone of the island's artistic identity and a bridge between the divine and the everyday. Through its timeless storytelling and the recent incorporation of modern themes, Kamasan painting remains a dynamic tradition, resonating with contemporary audiences and maintaining its place in the fabric of Balinese culture. Mangku Mura, a master of the Kamasan style, was an influential figure in the perpetuation of this tradition. His works, characterised by detailed narratives and a vivid colour palette, reflect Bali's spiritual essence. Overcoming initial social disadvantages, Mura's talent and entrepreneurial skills secured his status as a prominent Kamasan artist. His legacy showcases dedication to classical techniques and to the spiritual storytelling that defines Kamasan art. His daughter, Mangku Muriati, has carried on this artistic heritage while also carving her own niche. After graduating from Udayana University with a degree in art, she chose to uphold the traditional Kamasan methods. Her works, while traditional in form, also engage with contemporary social and political themes, reflecting the evolving Balinese society. As a priestess, her spiritual insights enrich her artistic expression, making her a unique figure on the Kamasan art scene. Together, Mangku Mura and Mangku Muriati exemplify the continuity, adaptability, and dynamic nature of Kamasan painting. Their contributions have ensured that this art form remains a living tradition, resonating with both the past and the present, and demonstrate its ability to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. The works of both father and daughter celebrate the spiritual and cultural narratives of Bali, ensuring that the Kamasan tradition remains a vital part of the island's artistic expression.
