Property of a deceased's estate c.1967 Raleigh 78cc Roma Scooter Project Registration no. not registered Frame no. none visable Engine no. none visible Britain's best-known and longest-surviving bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905, and again from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a motor scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. The scooter was the Roma, built by Bianchi in Milan, Italy, in whose range it featured as the Orsetto (Bear Cub). The Roma's 78cc two-stroke engine was mounted horizontally beneath the tubular spine frame and drove the rear wheel by means of an enclosed chain. Raleigh offered the Roma from November 1960 to August 1964, by which time the model had evolved through variants RS1, RS2 and RS3. It is estimated that approximately 23,400 Romas were made. Survivors are few. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, this incomplete Roma comes with a selection of restoration images (presumably of another machine); a Raleigh Roma Scooter Riding and Maintenance Instruction Book; a workshop manual; and a spare parts list. There is no registration document with this Lot. Buyers Premium and Charges


Like the vast majority of auctioneers, Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol (†, Ω, *) printed beside the lot number.

For Motorcycles (Lots 1-63) the Buyer's Premium will be 15% on the first £500,000 of the Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.

For Memorabilia/Automobilia and Spares (Lots 101-221) the Buyer's Premium is 28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price; 27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,001 up to and including £800,000; 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,001 up to and including £4,500,000 and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,001.

VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
