1924 Raleigh 348cc (see text) Registration no. AF 8685 Frame no. none visible Engine no. None visible Britain's best-known and longest-lived bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905, and from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. During the 1920s the Raleigh range expanded to include machines of a wide variety of capacities and types, ranging from a 175cc unit-construction lightweight to a hefty 998cc v-twin. Traditionally, trials had been Raleigh's favoured area of motorcycle competition, but in 1928 the firm entered the Isle of Man Senior TT with a team of new 495cc overhead-valve long-stroke singles, one of which finished eighth, a creditable first effort. Believed to be a Model 4, this delightful Vintage-era sidevalve Raleigh has been with its current owner for over 45 years. The vendor noted that he believes the Raleigh was possibly last on the road back in 1935 before it came into his possession some half a century ago. The vendor then took it upon himself to restore the Raleigh between 2020 and 2022. Not used since completion it will therefore need careful recommissioning before returning to the road. We are advised by the vendor that during restoration, he re-sleeved and rebored the cylinder barrel and that he believes the engine to be 3hp. However at the time of cataloguing it has not been possible to positively identify the cubic capacity of either 348cc (as listed in the old style log book) or 3hp (as per the current vendor), therefore bidders must satisfy themselves before bidding. Key not required Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
