A Minton pâte-sur-pâte plate by Marc Louis Solon, circa 1880 Of circular form, the rim cut-down, decorated with a classical woman wearing diaphanous robes gathered around her waist, her belt and sandals picked out in pale pink, reaching down to place a gilt collar around the neck of a chastised winged Cupid, signed 'L Solon', on a black ground, 18cm diam, impressed MINTONS, indistinct date cipher Footnotes: Provenance Marc Louis Solon By family descent It is interesting that Solon chose to keep this piece of his work, which has been passed down through the artist's family by way of Solon's sister-in-law, Cecile Marie Arnoux. The plate has been adapted into a plaque and tells a story of manufacturing difficulties. It is possible that Solon was allowed to keep this as a teaching tool, as he mentored other artists at Minton in the technique of pâte-sur-pâte. Firing challenges were costly and frustrating but presumably Solon felt that this piece was worth keeping as a memento of the time, effort and skill required to produce it.
