A Worcester chestnut basket, cover and stand, circa 1770 The impressive quatrelobed basket moulded and pierced all over with florets, arcading and honeycomb, the florets picked out in puce, the applied twig handles with modelled flower terminals, the centre of the stand painted with a colourful bouquet, the stand 25.5cm wide (3) Footnotes: Most Worcester baskets of this form have pierced covers and stands but solid bowls. These could serve as tureens for sugar and cream to accompany a dessert. The present lot is most unusual in that the bowl itself is also pierced. This indicates that this basket was, indeed intended to serve roast chestnuts.
