A West Pans stand from the Duke of Rutland service, circa 1765 Of hexafoil shape, with 'tiger lily and bow' relief moulded panels containing polychrome flower sprays reserved on a 'Littler's Blue' ground, the centre painted in orange enamel with the crest of a peacock in its pride, the motto 'POUR Y PARVENIR' above, 15cm wide, crossed LL mark in blue Footnotes: Provenance Tony Stevenson Collection Exhibited in 'Out of the Blue', 18th Century Scottish Porcelain, Museum of Edinburgh, 2008, no.8. Discussed in exhibition catalogue on p.16, where it is suggested that this was a stand for a coffee pot. Two circular teapot stands from the same service are illustrated at p.15. It is possible the present lot was intended as a spoon tray but six-lobed coffee pots were produced at West Pans and would have fitted the profile of this stand, see the example from the Sam and Jane Cole Collection sold by Bonhams Edinburgh on 28 August 2008, lot 374. The service was probably made for the marriage of John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland, to Louisa Tollemache, 7th Countess of Dysart, on 4 September 1765 at Old Cambus, Haddingtonshire.
