RAMSTONEV COOPERATIVE PAINTING PROJECT (American, 1937-1939) Untitled stamped 'Ramstonev' (lower left); inscribed 'Painted by 3 artists' on the Ramstonev's label (affixed to the backing paper); identified on a label from Thomas McCormick, Chicago (affixed to the backing paper) pastel on paper 60.4 x 45.1 cm (23 3/4 x 17 3/4 in). framed 78.0 x 62.5 x 3.0 cm (30 11/16 x 24 5/8 x 1 3/16 in). Footnotes: N.B. Charles Ramsey (1871-1951), Louis Stone (1902-1984), and Charles Evans (1907-1992) comprised the Ramstonev Cooperative Painting Project, based in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The three artists collaborated to create 'visual jazz,' hosting 'jam sessions' in the spirit of improvisation. On occasion, other artists would join, but the number of contributors never surpassed eight. A work was determined to be 'finished' when all of the contributors felt that it was complete. The present work is dated from 1938-39. Because the cooperative only existed for a brief time, the works that it produced are relatively scarce. They are invaluable expressions of the ethos of independence, collaboration, and modernity of the early 20th century.
