LARGE-SCALE, HANDMADE MODEL TRAIN CARS, TRACK AND SIGNALS • Constructed by Albert Sprague Coolidge • Circa 1920s-30s • The set includes a green-painted wood and metal passenger car, a silver-painted metal and wood tanker car, two red-painted wood and metal boxcars, a short red-painted metal caboose with applied lettering 'S+M RR,' and a long red-painted caboose with applied lettering 'EL R+R' with a battery-operated chain-drive motor system • Along with seven sections of track measuring a total of 25 1/5' • Three metal and wood signals • 31' longest car length • Also included is a copy of Sprague's book Building a Model Railroad, (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1929), and nineteen issues of Trains magazine spanning 1942-44. Footnotes: Provenance Acquired by the consignor in 2018 from a descendant of Albert Sprague Coolidge. Note Dr. Albert Sprague Coolidge (1884-1977) was a chemist and physicist in the field of quantum mechanics. He was a member of the Harvard University faculty from 1922-1960 and authored and co-authored numerous works in his fields of study. He was also an avid model railroader who used his scientific and mechanical skills to construct model railroad cars and equipment and wrote one of the earliest published works on model railroad design and construction.
