Charles Vyse Two bowls Stoneware, octagonal bowl with rich black glaze and dark blue and yellow splashes; together with a smaller bowl, stoneware, rich black glaze with iron rim, dark blue and yellow splashes and soft yellow speckle. Octagonal bowl: 9.2 cm high, 12 cm diameter Bowl: 7 cm high, 14.2 cm diameter Underside of octagonal bowl incised VYSE 1939 and 22. Underside of smaller bowl incised CHARLES VYSE CHELS and LR. Footnotes: Provenance Lady Maufe, wife of the architect Sir Edward Maufe, was a Director of Heal & Son, and for many years in charge of the Mansard Gallery on the fourth floor at Heal's. Prudence Maufe met artists and artisan potters there during the 1920s and 1930s, and collected pots made by those she admired such as Bernard Leach, Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie and William Staite Murray.
