Classical Mahogany, Tulip Poplar, and Pine Two-drawer Worktable, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, c. 1805. Single-board mahogany top with elliptic front, the edge veneered with molded crossbanding that continues over fillets and around corners to back edge of returns, splines inserted as glue blocks in grooved edges of mahogany board visible on top corners of unfinished back, which encloses a mahogany-veneered poplar and pine case, the bowed front rails conforming with top and containing two locking drawers of laminated pine with cockbead-molded and matched veneer fronts dovetailed to poplar cases, joined at the corners to rectangular mahogany stiles, the fronts of which are carved to form reeded pilasters flanking the drawers, continuing to finely turned and reeded legs on bulb-turned feet, the bottom enclosed with poplar panel behind the partial dustboards under both drawers, 55cm wide, 40cm deep, 81cm high (22 1/8in wide, 16 1/8in deep, 32 3/8in high).
