Diminutive Federal Satinwood-inlaid Mahogany Sideboard, attributed to Thomas Howard, Jr. (1774-1833), Pawtuxet and Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1800. Rectangular mahogany top with crossband-veneered front and return edges inlaid in the center with a string- and lozenge-patterned band, slightly overhanging the straight case, the front centering a string-inlaid mahogany paneled door opening onto deep interior fully divided from flanking drawer compartments by double-tenoned dividers, the proper right column of two drawers balanced by false two-drawer front on a single deep drawer at left, all drawers dovetailed with chestnut boards, the veneered stiles and apron rail inlaid with figured panels and underscored by a lozenge-patterned band along the serpentine edge of the apron and continuing over fronts of forelegs, which are inlaid only on the front with stringing along tapered sides down to satinwood-inlaid cuff, the bottom and back enclosed with horizontal white pine boards, 119cm wide, 50cm deep, 104cm high (47 1/4in wide, 20 1/2in deep, 41 1/2in high).
