FIRST EDITION. 'Probably the first European traveller in Ethiopia in the 19th century was George Annesley, Viscount of Valentia. He was accompanied by Henry Salt, his secretary and draughtsman, who provided many of the illustrations and some of the text of Annesley's three-volume narrative' (Howgego, Encyclopedia of Exploration to 1800). The work also includes descriptions of Lucknow, Benares, Seringapatam, Madras and Ceylon, and an overview of the inhabitants and history of the Abyssinian regions of Aksum and Adwa.
