Text volume in original reddish-brown cloth stamped in gilt; atlas volume in original cloth-backed boards with printed paper label to upper cover. Text volume evenly toned, infrequent scattered spots, title-page with ownership signature and library stamp erased, bookseller labels to front pastedown, hint of two library labels previously on spine, some shelfwear including closed tear at head of spine, but cloth attractive overall. Atlas volume with tiny chips and creases to page edges, stains and closed tears to final plate, pastedowns foxed, spine partially absent, general wear to cover. Provenance: Wissenschaftlicher Club (stamp to atlas dedication page); Freifrau Ritter von Erlanger (gift inscription to dedication page). FIRST EDITION of this work rarely found complete. Schlagintweit was a German scholar tutored by Franz Joseph Lauth. He later sold 102 Tibetan manuscripts that were collected by his brothers, and which had likely been used to research this work, to the Bodleian Library.
