Rightly so. Best not to look in there.' —from Blood Meridian. FIRST EDITION OF MCCARTHY'S MASTERPIECE, considered among the greatest novels of the 20th century, INSCRIBED by McCarthy to his second wife, 'For Anne / With love / Cormac.' McCarthy began researching Blood Meridian in 1974 while still married to Annie beginning with his initial travels to El Paso. He began writing it in earnest in 1975, while still working on Suttree. Relocating to El Paso, McCarthy continued his work on Blood Meridian with the help of a MacArthur grant in 1981.
