SIGNED FIRST EDITION OF MCCARTHY'S FIRST BOOK SENT TO ANNIE DELISLE. MCCARTHY, CORMAC. 1933-2023. The Orchard Keeper. New York: Random House, 1965. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth-backed mauve paper boards, spine stamped in red and gilt, lettered in gilt, publisher's printed dust jacket, some foxing to endpapers, soiling to prelims. Provenance: Annie Delisle (typed note of presentation from Suzanne Beves on Random House letterhead). A SIGNED FIRST EDITION OF MCCARTHY'S AWARD-WINNING FIRST BOOK, FROM THE COLLECTION OF ANNIE DELISLE, WITH SIGNED NOTE OF PRESENTATION FROM THE PUBLISHER LAID-IN. McCarthy's first novel The Orchard Keeper was completed while he worked part-time as a mechanic in Chicago. Published in 1965, it won the 1966 PEN/Faulkner prize for best debut novel. At the same time, he won a 1965 fellowship from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and a 1966 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The first he used to travel by boat to Ireland, meeting and falling in love with English singer Annie Delisle on board, and the second he used to travel around Europe following Annie and her band. They ultimately landed in Ibiza, where he and Annie fell in with a group of expatriate artists, and Cormac completed his second novel, Outer Dark. This copy is signed by McCarthy on the half-title page, with a note from Suzanne Beves at Random House, sending her the book, '... I remember you asked for any first printings of THE ORCHARD KEEPER that we could lay our hands on. This somewhat battered copy came up from our stock room when I ordered a copy for Jim Wilcox ... since he thinks very highly of Cormac's work, he has been sending some copies to colleagues with notes.'
