MALTON, JAMES 1761-1803. A Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin. London: for James Malton, c.1803. Oblong Folio (417 x 530 mm). 26 hand-colored aquatint engravings including frontispiece, engraved title-page and dedication page, 3 engraved plates in sepia, large folding engraved map of Dublin with some hand-coloring in outlines, engraved heraldic vignettes (24) on recto of initial text leaves for each of the main hand-colored plates. Modern half green straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, original title-label pasted to front pastedown. Light foxing, more apparent in margins than on colored portion of plates, plate 18 ('Marine School') with separation along upper plate mark, plate 24 ('Barracks, Dublin') with separation along right plate mark, repaired on verso, light offset from folding plan of Dublin. Provenance: 'F.P.G.' (tiny stamp to upper margin of title and dedication). SECOND EDITION, THE RARE & PREFERRED COLORED ISSUE. Includes 'A Plan of the City of Dublin' London: W. Faden, January 2, 1797, which is not found in many copies. James Malton, the son of English architectural draughtsman and author Thomas Malton the elder and brother of artist Thomas Malton the younger, captured Dublin at a key point in its development at the close of the 18th century.
