DIEGO RIVERA AND FRIDA KAHLO SKETCHES IN AUTOGRAPH BOOKS. Two autograph books containing 4 line drawings by Diego Rivera, signed 'Diego Rivera' or 'DR,' and 2 inscriptions with small drawings by Frida Kahlo, signed 'Carmen Rivera,' together with signatures, doodles, sketches and greetings from actor Paul Muni, and a variety of others, from the 1920s and 1930s. 2 volumes, small oblong 8vo, with black padded leatherette covers, one with ownership signature of Lydia Cohen. Contributors also include a number of unidentified signers, with many of the inscriptions in Hebrew, many illustrated with drawings. Some wear and browning. Provenance: Lydia Cohen and Evelyn Cohen, by descent to current owners. While Diego Rivera was working on the Detroit Industry Murals in 1932-1933, he and Frida Kahlo were entertained at the home of the Cohen family in Detroit, where Lydia and her sister Evelyn, both teenagers at the time, obtained their signatures. Diego Rivera provided four sketches, two in each of the albums, and Frida Kahlo appears on two pages, one in each album. One of Kahlo's inscriptions, dated March 16, 1933, states that it 'three days before going to New York,' with the very rare form of her signature 'Carmen Rivera.' The over-talented couple went to New York that month for Rivera's work on the mural 'Man at the Crossroads' at Rockefeller Center.
